About Michel

I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. In August of 1990, when I was eighteen years old, I was shot eight times on the streets of my city. One of those bullets reached my head and took my sight for good. That is where my story could have ended. It did not.

What came after was not a tidy recovery. It was a fight — against the darkness, against the bottle, against a system that assumed I was finished, and against every voice, including my own, that told me the life I wanted was no longer possible. I lost my way more than once. I made mistakes I am not proud of. In time, and with my faith, I found my footing again.

I settled in Kansas and got to work. Over the years I became a licensed insurance broker, licensed in real estate and mortgage origination, a Kansas auto dealer, and a vending operator running many locations. I worked in information technology and consulted on government programs. Some of these doors opened to me only after I refused to accept that a blind man had no business walking through them.

What I do now

Today I work entirely from home, creating original fiction and music. I am the author of my memoir and several fiction series, and I make music released through Iron Cane Media. Technology has been a great equalizer for me: with a screen reader and a lot of patience, I can write, produce, and share my work with the world.

I live in Kansas with my wife, who is my first reader, my honest critic, and my partner in all of it.
